What about my "Smart Phone" ?

Just a word of caution if you are purchasing a new phone just to run Sellinam.

Some of the latest "Smart Phones" try to do away with the keypad - or at least minimise their function. This was the case with my own P900 mobile phone. Sellinam works fine on these devices, however, we will not be able to "interact" with the software as there is no mechanism to use the keypad. My phone "receives" messages with the flap open and I can somehow figure and compose with the basic interface it provides at the bottom of the screen. Nothing close to composing with the normal keypad.

I have a few users who aren't very happy about Sellinam on their P900s, and Motorola E680s. These devices provide touch screen and stylus inputs for text. In the case of P800, P900 and P910, the flap must be open in order to run Sellinam (or any Java application).

Another case is the SonyEricsson S700 - a beautiful phone with brilliant resolution, audio and camera function. However, because of it's super high resolution, Tamil text appears very tiny on the screen. We do not have a provision to have bigger fonts (yet) - purely to optimise the size of the application. If we see enough demand, we'll be happy to tailor make a version specifically for the S700 - so please write to us if you own one of these beauties.

Our initial release takes the middle-path: Not very low-end and not very high-end. SonyEricsson's K500i, K700i, Nokia's 6230, 3220, and the new Series 60 phones are ideal hand-sets if you want to purchase one just for Sellinam. (Note that the 7650 and 3650 are not supported).

We do have a Symbian version in the pipeline and will be launching this in the near future. This will run on the P800, 900 910 and Nokia's Series 60s (hopefully on the 7650 and 3650 as well). However, we are unable to disclose the functionality at this point - so don't depend on this scoop :-)

செல்லினம் வெளியாகி சில நாட்களே ஆனது. சிங்கப்பூரில் உள்ள வானொலி தொலைக்காட்சி ஊடகங்களோடு மலேசிய நாளேடுகளும் மிகப் பெரிய அளவில் செய்திகளை வெளியிட்டு இந்த வட்டாரத் தமிழரின் ஆவலை பெருமளவு தூண்டியுள்ளனர்.

செல்லினத்தை உருவாக்க 18 மாத காலம் பிடித்தது. இதில் தொழில்நுட்ப உருவாக்கம் மட்டும் அல்ல, செல்பேசி நிறுவனங்களோடு கலந்தாலோசித்தக் காலமும் அடங்கும்.

வெள்ளோட்டம் இட்டதும் எங்களுக்கு இருக்கும் முதல் கடமை, பயனாளர்களின் தேவையை பூர்த்தி செய்வதுதான். முதல் முதலில் தமிழ் மின்-அஞ்சல் சேவையை வெளியிட்ட காலத்தில் எங்களின் வேலை சற்று சுலபமாகவே இருந்தது. காரணம் அந்த காலத்தில் முரசு அஞ்சல் செயலியைப் பயன்படுத்தத் தொடங்கியவர்கள் பெரும்பாலோர் கணினி தொழில்நுட்பத்தை அறிந்தவர்கள்.

செல்லினம் முற்றிலும் மாறுபட்ட பயனாளர் வட்டத்தை நாடுகிறது. இவர்களுக்கு உதவுவதையும் அவர்களிடம் இருந்து வரும் கருத்துகளை நேரடியாகச் சேகரிப்பதிலுமே எங்கள் நேரத்தை இப்போது செலவு செய்கின்றோம். இது அனவருக்கும் நல்லது. தொடக்கத்தில் இருந்த சிக்கல் இனி இருக்காது. வெளிநாடுகளுக்குச் செல்லும் போது, எங்கள் உதவி இல்லாமலேயே அனைவரும் இதை பதிவிறக்கம் செய்து பயன்படுத்த வாய்பமையும்.

எனவேதான் இந்தத் தாமதம். விரைவில் உங்கள் ஊருக்கும் வருகிறோம்.

செல்லினச் செயலி கடந்த சனிக்கிழமை வெளிவந்தது முதல், ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் அதனைப் பயன் படுத்தும் சில பயனாளர் நண்பர்களை நேரடியாகச் சந்தித்து அவர்களின் அனுபவங்களைத் தெரிந்து கொள்ளலாம் என்ற நோக்கில் மூன்று ஒன்று கூடும் நிகழ்ச்சிகளை வெவ்வேறு இடங்களில் நடத்தினோம்.

முற்றிலும் புதிய நண்பர்கள். புதியத் தேவைகள். புதிய அனுபவங்கள். ஆங்கிலத்தில் இதைக் கூறினால் "a completely different demography" என்று கூறுவேன்.

நேற்று சந்தித்த ஒரு பயனாளர் - உண்மையிலேயே செல்லினத்தின் பிரவி பலனை உணரச் செய்துவிட்டார்:

அவர் தமிழகத்தில் இருந்து வந்தவர். சிங்கையில் காண்ட்ரெக்ட் வேலை செய்கிறார். இரவு 7.00 மணி சந்திப்புக் கூட்டத்திற்கு 5.30க்கெல்லாம் வந்துவிட்டார். 6.45 மணிக்கு நான் வந்து சேர்ந்ததும் உடனே அவர் புதிதாக வாங்கிய Samsung C200 செல் பேசியைத் தந்து "இதில் தமிழ் எஸ் எம் எஸ் போட்டுக்கொடுங்க.." என்று கேட்டுவிட்டு, நான் அதை நோண்டிப் பார்ப்பதற்குள் தமது மகிழ்ச்சியையும் எதிர்பார்ப்பையும் சொல்ல ஆரம்பித்துவிட்டார்.

கேட்டுக்கொண்டே செல்பேசியை நோண்டிக்கொண்டிருந்தேன்.

"என் மனைவி ஊர்ல இருக்கா. அவளுக்கு ஆங்கிலம் படிக்கத் தெரியாதுங்க தமிழ் மட்டும்தான் ...." என்று சொன்னது கூட என்னை அவ்வளவாகப் பாதிக்கவில்லை.

"ஆங்கிலம் தெரியாட்டினா என்ன...இப்பதான் அடிக்கடி போன் பன்றதுக்கு வாய்ப்பிருக்கே? எத்தனை வகைச் சலுகை அட்டைகள். நலம் விசாரிக்கக் கடிதம் எழுதிக் காத்திருக்க வேண்டியதில்லையே. பசியாறும் நேரம், மதிய உணவு, இரவு உணவு -- ஒவ்வொரு நேரத்திலும் அழைத்து 'சாப்பிட்டியா'ன்னு' கேட்கலாமே.." என்ற வேடிக்கையாகக் கூறிக்கொண்டு அவர் செல்பேசியில் WAP/GPRS செட்டிங்-கை பெற்றுக் கொண்டிருந்தபோது அவர் சொன்ன ஒரு வரி என்னை அப்படியே உட்கார வைத்தது:

"அவளுக்கு பேசக் கூட வராதுங்க..."

வெளியீட்டு விழா முடிந்ததிலிருந்து இது போன்ற கேள்விகள் தொலைபேசி மூலமாகவும், மின்-அஞ்சல் மூலமாகவும் ஆங்கிலக் கூறுஞ்செய்திகள் மூலமாகவும் எங்களுக்கு வந்து சேர்கின்றன.

நேரடியாக பல பயணாளர் நண்பர்களைச் செந்தித்தபோது, பல மாடல்களைக் கொண்டுவந்து, இதில் தமிழ் செய்யலாமா என்று கேட்கும்போது, "இதில் முடியாதுங்க..." என்று அரம்பிப்பதற்கே மிகவும் சிறமமாக இருந்தது.

உண்மை நிலையும் அதுதான். எல்லா செல் பேசிகளிகும் செல்லினச் செயலிகள் இயங்காது - புதிய வகை செல்பேசிகள், அதுவும் JAVA MIDP 2.0 தொழில்நுட்பம் அடங்கிய செல்பேசிகளில்தான் இயங்கும். இதைத் தவிர, முழுமௌயான குறுஞ்செய்தியை தமிழில் அனுப்புவதற்கு வேறு வழி இல்லை. காலப்போக்கில் புதிய செல்பேசிகள் அதிக புழக்கத்திற்கு வரும் என்பதில் ஐயமில்லை.

Sellinam - World's First Tamil SMS Launched

Dear Friends,

We are pleased to let you know that "Sellinam" - the Tamil name for our family of Mobile software - was successfully launched on the 15th of Jan 2005, under the banner of Oli96.8FM, Singapore's Tamil Radio.

Kavipperarasu Vairamuthu had the first Tamil SMS message composed on a Sony Ericsson Z1010 mobile phone which was sent to Mrs. Ramachandran, wife of the owner of Ananda Bhavan restaurant, Oli98.8 and Dr. Re Karthigesu who received the message in Penang, Malaysia.

The message (in Tamil Unicode):

இன்று முதல் நான்கு தமிழ்
இதோ கைத்தொலைபேசியில்கணினித் தமிழ்!

The event was carried live by Oli and appeared on TV news last night.

Friends in Malaysia may want to see the story in Tamil Nesan (17 January 2005) and Malaysia Nanban (18 January 2005).

Since the launch, our mailboxes are getting flooded with hundreds of emails from enthusiastic users from all over the world who want to immediately start sending Tamil SMS messages.

We apologise for not providing the details on time. The response from the local users alone was overwhelming and all our resources are being deployed to ensure that the delivery and use of "Sellinam" goes without a glitch.

In the meantime, we are working on a "frequently asked questions" list and will provide you with as much information as possible from time to time. We ask for your patience and understanding.
